About Brett
Brett Cowan founded The Gully Shop in 2013, but his connection to timber framing started much earlier. He grew up in a timber frame home that his father built, surrounded by the craftsmanship and character of hand-cut joinery and solid timbers.
Before becoming a full-time timber framer, Brett worked as an elementary physical education teacher. During summers and weekends, he began building small timber frames for friends and family. What started as a way to help people create beautiful, lasting structures gradually grew into a full-time craft and business.
Today, Brett specializes in traditional mortise-and-tenon timber framing, building custom structures such as pavilions, porches, barns, and home accents. Many projects begin with trees from a customer’s own property, which Brett mills and transforms into finished timbers in his shop.
Brett lives in central Pennsylvania with his family and continues to approach each project the same way he did when he first started—by taking pride in careful craftsmanship and building structures meant to last for generations.
